على عكس أو حتى ضد نزعة معاصرة لدى كثير من الشعراء ممن يقولون، زعما أو اقتناعا وممارسة، بأن القارئ لا يعنيهم ولا يؤثر في العملية الإبداعية لديهم، فإن تيد كوزر لا يخجل من المجاهرة بأنه يكتب دائما وفي باله القارئ، وهذا لا ينعكس فحسب على مزاجه الشعري، والموضوعات التي يحفل بها شعره، بل أيضا على لغة هذا الشعر وتركيبه. وهذا يجعل من كوزر، كما يصفه الناقد والشاعر دانا غيويا في كتابه \"هل يمكن أن يعنينا الشعر؟\" (1992)، \"شاعرا شعبيا\"، لا بالمعنى الجماهيري \"إذ ليس من شاعر جماهيري في أمريكا اليوم، لكن بمعنى أنه يكتب للقارئ العادي، غير المثقف\". هذا القارئ الذي يبدي كوزر تجاهه احتراما من نوع خاص لإقباله على الشعر في زمن يصعب وصفه بالشعري. يقول: \"أحاول أن أكرم صبر قارئي وكرمه من خلال قولي ما أريد قوله بأقصى وضوح وإيجاز ممكنين في الوقت نفسه لا أحاول أن أهين عقله والاستخفاف به، لكنيي لا أرى أي فائدة من تضمين شعري أي تجربة ثقافية لم يختبرها هذا القارئ بالضرورة وفي الوقت نفسه أنا شديد الحذر من المبالغة في التبسيط... هناك خيط رفيه بين ما يحتمله ويتسامح معه القارئ الغريب وما لا يحتمله\".
